Most residents agree that Dubai is a great place to live and work. One of Dubai’s many advantages for expatriates is the widespread use of the English language. It is important to remember however, that the official language in the UAE is Arabic, and it is the only language spoken by many Emiratis and Arab nationals. For an expatriate, being able to speak Arabic opens up new business and social opportunities and enriches the experience of living and working in Dubai.
Arabic is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It is spoken by some 300 million people in more than 20 countries worldwide, ranging from Morocco to Iraq and as far south as Somalia and Sudan. As well as being the language of the Islamic holy book, the Qu’ran, Arabic is also an official language of the United Nations, the Arab League and the African Union.
Arabic is interesting linguistically too. The modern-day languages of India, Turkey, Portugal, Spain and even English are full of words of Arabic origin. (Did you know that the words ‘algebra’, ‘jasmine’, ‘lemon’, and ‘mascara’ are all derived from Arabic?)
